Mrs. Harmon's Class Helps the DAV

Picture
After studying about birds, Mrs. Harmon’s 4th grade class made bird wreaths.  They were wire rings filled with things birds would use to make nests.  The wreaths were sold and all of the proceeds were given to the Disabled American Veterans Transportation fund to help with the van that takes the veterans to doctor appointments out of town.  After talking to DAV members the students found out that the DAV works only by private donations.  The student were very excited to help and donated $430.00.

Mr. Young wins an award!

Yesterday the MAC honored Mr. Young with an award for his service in the community and his commitment to honoring veterans, both in his classroom and in the community.  Every year Mr. Young brings veterans into his classroom to speak with students and share stories.  In addition, Mr. Young painted the Kingsley Field mural on the side of the VFW building downtown.  His attention to the significant contribution of veterans and the respect he teaches is an invaluable lesson for his fourth graders, and is part of what makes us proud to have him teaching here at Roosevelt.  Click here to link to the Herald and News article about Mr. Young.

Roosevelt 5th grade orchestra performs at Ross Ragland

Roosevelt's beginning orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Brent Hakanson, performed at the Ross Ragland Cultural Center this past Sunday, May 1st.  The group was playing as part of the Music for the Children instrument drive.  A variety of local groups performed while people brought in instruments to donate to schools for students to use.  What a great cause and a wonderful opportunity to hear some of our young musicians.  Below is a small excerpt from their performance.

Fifth grade coin drive efforts rewarded with limo ride!

Picture
The classes at Roosevelt participated in a school-wide fund-raising campaign sponsored by the PTO.  The classes raised money to be used for buying new playground equipment, fencing the upper playground, and fixing the steps to the school.  All the classes did a great job supporting this worthy cause.  Ms. Cole's fifth grade class raised the most money (over $700!) and was rewarded with a limousine ride around town and lunch at Abby's pizza.  As you can see by the pictures, a fun time was had by all!  Thanks to the PTO for rewarding our kids' efforts.

Our PTO is amazing!

Picture
We are so blessed to have such an amazing group of people who take care of us at Roosevelt.  Our PTO has done an "Extreme Teachers' Lounge Makeover!"  What a treat it was to walk in this morning and see such an inviting room (and I hear there are a few more finishing touches still on the way!).  The Roosevelt PTO has repeatedly stepped in where they see a need and gone above and beyond to make a truly extraordinary difference.

In addition to the wonderful gift to the teachers, the PTO also gave generously to the library.  The PTO's financial gift enabled us to purchase new fiction books and AR tests, as well as a number of hardcover biographies (and AR tests), and some necessary supplies.  These purchases make a huge difference for all of our students.  Thank you for helping to take care of the needs of our students!  It really does take a village...

It's that time of year again!

These are five of the entries students submitted last year to the Google contest for designing a new logo.  We have some really talented kids in our school!  Contact Mrs. de Vries in the library if you would like more information on this exciting contest.

Canned food drive

Picture
Check back here for results of the canned food drive.  Mr. Young's class was the big winner in the race amongst the classes.  We'll let you know whether Roosevelt or Conger won the race between the schools.  Either way, we know that the Food Bank won for sure!!! Way to go Roosevelt community!

Our student council headed up the canned food drive and did great work counting and organizing all the food that came in.  Congratulations, Roosevelt and the Student Council for another amazing canned food drive!

Fifth Grade Classes visit Scarecrow Row

Picture
The two fifth grade classes got both some exercise and some inspiration as they walked downtown to Scarecrow Row.  The students took the walk to see scarecrows on display in front of local businesses and get ideas for the scarecrows their classes made (see above).  Straw for the project is being donated by Noonan Farms.

The kids had fun posing in front of the wide variety of scarecrows, including a scarecrow that attracted crows, a princess, a tiger, a KU football player, a pirate, and many others.  Next week we'll see where the inspiration leads them as students design and build their own scarecrows.
